What is an AI agent, and how is it different from a chatbot

"We already have a chatbot" is the most common objection we hear from business owners in Baku. Almost always, that means a button-based bot — "Pick option 1, 2, or 3" — that breaks on the first unusual question and hands off to a human. An AI agent is a fundamentally different technology.

A chatbot follows a script, an agent understands meaning

A classic chatbot is a decision tree: pre-written buttons and answers. The moment a customer writes something the developer didn't anticipate, the bot gets lost and either repeats the menu or calls in a human.

An AI agent is built on a large language model (Claude, by Anthropic, in Nexa AI's case). It doesn't search for a template match — it actually understands the question in natural language, whether Azerbaijani, Russian, or English, and answers on the merits, even if the phrasing is unusual.

What an AI agent actually does

  • Holds a conversation in free text, not menu buttons
  • Remembers the context of the whole conversation, not just the last message
  • Advises on products and pricing based on the business's real data
  • Qualifies leads — asks clarifying questions instead of just collecting form submissions
  • Follows through to a result: places an order, books a table, schedules a viewing
  • Recognizes when a case is complex and hands it off to a human

Where it's used

In practice, an AI agent solves a specific business's specific pain point: in an Instagram shop it takes orders and answers product questions, at a real estate agency it qualifies leads and books viewings, at a restaurant it takes reservations 24/7. It's not a generic checkbox widget — it's a tool tuned to your process.

Cost and turnaround

A pilot on real channels takes 2–3 weeks, and plans start from 149 ₼/month — cheaper than employing even one manager. See the full pricing breakdown in "How much does an AI agent cost for a business in Azerbaijan."

The easiest way to see the difference is to talk to a real agent. Nexa AI's homepage has an AI consultant built right into the header — ask it anything about your business right now.
